Government Reinstates UGX 1 Million Monthly Allowance for Medical Interns
KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s current cohort of medical interns is set to receive a monthly gross facilitation allowance of UGX 1 million following a reversal of an earlier government position.
The decision was announced in Parliament on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, by Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, who said Cabinet had reconsidered the matter and approved the payment of allowances to the serving cohort of medical interns.
Under the new arrangement, each medical intern will receive a gross monthly facilitation of UGX 1 million.
The government has also clarified that the payment will apply equally to government-sponsored and privately sponsored medical interns, with no distinction made between the two categories.
The decision brings clarity to the facilitation of the current cohort following uncertainty over whether interns would receive government allowances during their internship period.
Medical internship is a critical stage in the training of health professionals, during which graduates undertake supervised practical work in designated health facilities before qualifying for full professional practice.
The Cabinet decision means all eligible interns in the current cohort will now receive the approved monthly facilitation regardless of how they financed their university education.
